Assignment 2: Elements of Design
Single point dominating the composition
Two points
Out of the two photographs under this title of 'two points', I prefer
the upper one. The points are Monte Cervino (aka the Matterhorn) and, not so
much the building, but the iconic poster of the exhilarated lady. And no - she
is not sporting a pair of Marigolds...! This poster can be seen all over the
Cervinia resort. It is reminiscent of a similar poster of Skegness from the
last century...
Several points in a
deliberate shape
A combination of horizontal and vertical lines
This photograph is a bit of a cheat, in that there are no horizontal lines to speak of, but I love the colour and shape of the vertically-placed snowboards and skis!
This photograph is a bit of a cheat, in that there are no horizontal lines to speak of, but I love the colour and shape of the vertically-placed snowboards and skis!
This photo shows a covered walkway in a area of shops in Cervinia. The horizontal and
vertical lines were easy to spot. What is more significant is the expressions
on the faces of the two figures - my wife and daughter. They are clearly having a great time - laughing at my
photographic antics!
The first image was a 'steal': a real diagonal roof just asking to be
photographed. The second makes use of 'implied' diagonals. I like the way the
lines seem to point to the ever-present mountains seen between the two
apartment blocks.
This is the ceiling inside the parish church of Cervinia. The graceful
lines follow the curved shapes which are typical in the architecture of certain
parts of northern Italy.
This image was shot from a ski lift and was angled straight down at the
ground below. The photograph was edited to show up the naturally curved forms
in the snow, fashioned by the wind.
Distinct, even if irregular,
shapes
At least two
kinds of implied triangle
Apart from the obvious mountain shapes, with the Matterhorn being the
dominant one, triangles occur elsewhere. They often created simply by a point
of view, such as seen here. The two photographs were taken from a ski lift.
They show the cables of the lift and the shadows cast upon the snow by the
pylons that snake around everywhere in this valley.
